Wendell is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,434 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill metropolitan statistical area. The town was named for John Wendell, one of the original European settlers in the area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Wendell has a total area of 7.2 square miles (18.6 km2), all of it land. Prior to incorporation in 1902, the borders of Wendell were roughly those of Franklinton Township. The municipality of Wendell represents a joint effort by the citizens of Knightdale and Zebulon to form one central community within eastern Wake County. The Town lies within the Neuse River Basin and is located approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of Raleigh along U.S. Route 64/264/401. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters.
